We stand by the quality of our installs and understand that homeowners are commonly frustrated by the need to re-sod often. Can I repair my suffering grass instead of sodding?

  • Lawn Top Dressing: Often suffering and established grass can be saved and there is no need to re sod. Lawn top dressings, a mixture of compost and peat moss, can be applied to struggling areas to help boost soil nutrients and amend the existing sandy soil. Top Dressings can also be utilized on healthy lawns to help prevent them from declining.

  • Aeration: We offer aeration services to break up compacted soil and to bring new life to your lawn. Often used in tandem with top dressing, the lawn sees the best results.

Case Study: Why Proper Sod Installation Preparation Is So Important in Jacksonville, Florida

The Challenge

One of the biggest mistakes we see in Northeast Florida is new sod being installed over poorly prepared ground. While fresh sod may look beautiful on installation day, many lawns begin thinning, developing weeds, or struggling to establish healthy roots within months.

Unfortunately, some contractors simply mow the existing lawn short, till weeds into the soil, or lay new sod directly over old grass. Although this may save time and money upfront, it often creates long-term problems for the homeowner.

Our Approach

At Advanced Lawn and Garden LLC, we believe the foundation of a beautiful lawn begins before the first piece of sod is ever installed.

Instead of covering up existing problems, we remove the old vegetation and the upper layer of poor-quality soil when necessary. This gives us a clean foundation to build from.

We then evaluate the property’s drainage, sunlight exposure, and irrigation before adding quality topsoil and grading the area to promote healthy root growth. Finally, we recommend the best sod variety for the specific conditions of the yard, whether that means St. Augustine, Zoysia, Bahia, or another suitable grass.

Why Preparation Matters

Proper soil preparation provides several long-term benefits:

  • Stronger root development

  • Improved drainage

  • Better moisture retention

  • Reduced weed competition

  • A smoother, more even lawn

  • Faster establishment

  • Healthier turf that lasts for years

Installing premium sod over poor soil is like building a beautiful home on an unstable foundation. The sod can only perform as well as the soil beneath it.

The Result

Our customers consistently notice the difference.

By investing time in proper preparation, homeowners enjoy lawns that establish more quickly, remain healthier through Florida’s hot summers, and require fewer repairs over time.

At Advanced Lawn and Garden LLC, we believe quality landscaping starts below the surface. That’s why we never cut corners during site preparation. A properly prepared lawn is an investment that continues paying off long after installation is complete.
